Meet Matt Melancon, DDS, FAGD

Dr. Matt Melancon is a 2009 graduate of the LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans. He completed a General Practice Residency from 2009 – 2010 also in New Orleans. Dr. Melancon was born and raised in Lafayette and is privileged to take over Dr. McKay’s dental practice in downtown Broussard which was established in 1983. Dr. Melancon is blessed to be married to Sarah Melancon and they have two beautiful daughters named Annie and Norah. He enjoys spending time with his family and being outdoors.
Dr. Melancon volunteers at St. Bernadette dental clinic in downtown Lafayette, which provides oral surgery for the working poor in Lafayette and the surrounding areas. Dr. Melancon is an active member of the following dental organizations and has also completed the continuing education and testing requirements for Fellowship status in the Academy of General Dentistry and is currently attending a Master Track education continuum.

Why choose an FAGD Dentist
If your dentist is a Fellow or Master of the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD or MAGD), they are the best of the best in the field. Only about 6 percent of general dentists in the U.S. and Canada are AGD Fellows, and less than 2 percent are AGD Masters. You can rest assured that your dentist cares about knowing the latest techniques and best practices in dentistry. Your dentist practices these techniques in a classroom setting multiple times a year — not every dentist does this.
To become an AGD Fellow, a dentist must:
- Complete over 500 credit hours of continuing education.
- Earn 350 of those 500 credits in live courses.
- Pass an exam equal in difficulty to board certification exams.
- Complete over 1,100 credit hours of continuing education.
- Earn 400 of those 1,100 credits in hands-on courses.
- Pass an exam equal in difficulty to board certification exams.
Sedation Dentistry
For your convenience, we offer these three types of comfort and sedation dentistry:
Nitrous Oxide
This “laughing gas,” as most people know it, is used for simple fillings or routine cleaning treatments and is the most common form of sedation. Thanks to this simple form of sedation, your entire dental treatment can be a relaxing experience.
Sedation By IV
During IV Sedation, the patient’s vital signs are monitored throughout the entirety of the procedure, as the sedation is administered via IV. The patient will have been sleeping during the entire process, in this case, and will awaken only after the procedure.
Suppose a patient must return to school or work after completing the procedure. In that case, it will be especially beneficial for them to understand their need for sufficient recovery time before they leave.
Conscience Oral Sedation
We currently offer oral sedation for our patients who wish to remain conscience and yet come to us with gagging problems or a higher than average amount of fear and anxiety. Throughout the entire procedure, we closely monitor their vital signs once giving a combination of oral medications.
Once taking the oral medication we provide, the patient becomes highly relaxed and drowsy, and after their appointment, most patients remember nothing of the fear or anxiety they may have thought to experience without.
You will not be put to sleep with oral sedation, and during the entire procedure, you will be able to respond to Dr. Melancon and his team.
